A Day in the Life of a Home Care Worker

A day in the life of a home care worker is very diverse. No two care packages are the same and the needs of different people can differ on a daily basis. At PRN Homecare we complete a home care assessment for all our customers and tailor a care package to their exact needs. We always make sure that our customers feel comfortable and always maintain their privacy, dignity and independence.

We talk to many of our care workers about their day so that we are aware of any issues or challenges they are facing. It is important to us that our care workers feel looked after too as we want them to feel valued and appreciated so they can offer the best possible care to our customers.

A typical day for one our carers would start with visiting their regular customers. It could be an early morning start to help them out of bed or get their breakfast. We like to offer our customers consistency so they can see the same carer on a regular basis.  This allows them to build up a personal but professional relationship. Our carer will get to know your likes and dislikes and this builds trust. We want our customers to feel comfortable and at ease with our staff.

Some visits will be for short periods to check in on someone who needs some personal or practical support.  For example, helping them with washing, dressing, meal preparation or taking medication. Some of our customers need more practical help such as collecting prescriptions, paying bills, shopping or simply just some companionship.

Other customers will have just come out of hospital and may need assistance settling back home, help with their mobility, toileting needs or getting in and out of bed.  Some have complex medical needs that they need more specialist assistance with.

A lot of our care staff offer respite for full time carers. We visit many homes where a family member who is a full-time carer simply needs support and we give them a break from being a full-time carer.

All our care staff are dedicated and love what they do, which is helping to make a difference in the lives of the elderly, sick and vulnerable and helping them to still live independent lives and remain in their own homes.
